Circle Brooch Tutorial

These brooches originated from my need to keep little keepsakes of favourite clothing which -for a variety of reasons couldn't be worn, saved or gifted.

First of all, you must decide whether you want a neat, precise  finish to the brooch or if the chabby chic look is for you.
This will determine you choice of material. Jersey, felt and synthetic materials like lycra will do quite for the first instance while fabric like linen, cotton and denim will result in the second.

For this tutorial I chose various cotton scraps from some of my all-time favourite material.

So, here goes.

1.Cut out circles in varying sizes.
This will help you see what your brooch will look like when finished and it will help you make more in the same size later if you wish to.
I have cardboard circles that I use for all sorts of projects so I just choose the sizes I want..

2.If you are making more than one brooch, cut out circles in all sizes.

3.This will help you mix and match the material for the various brooches so that  when finished you'll have a number of different brooches with a unified colour scheme.

4.If you're unsure about your sewing-in-circles skills, you might want to pin the fabrics as you wish them to be sewn.
(This is great for lightweight fabrics that tend to have a will of their own when you're trying to sew them in a particular way, but for other fabrics such as cotton or linen, I find that they just mess up my nice straight circles a lot of the time, so I skip them.)

5.There are many centre variations you might want to try.
There are three examples of the ones I like, other than the simple cirle: a pin wheel, a spiral and just parallel lines.
Try out whatever inspires you and come up with what you like best.

When you've finished with the sewing it's time to turn your attention to the backing.

6.I like to use denim a lot because it's sturdy and because I love the way it frays but you can use any kind of material to get the look you're trying for.
One way of  doing this is cutting circles of your backing and sewing it onto your brooch.
Another way which is actually much easier and saves time and effort is sewing the brooches on the backing material -with space in-between- and then cutting around the final booch with as much or as little of the backing fabric showing around the edges.

Here are some of the finished brooches.
There is only one more step to go:

7.Attach brooch finding and wear.

You can wear them on your t-shirts, jackets, bags or hats.
They're very versatile and great for a little pick me up of colour or a quick gift to a friend of practicaly any age.
Change the fabrics and colours and change the look.

If you would like to skip the wait and have your new brooch look worn and loved instantly, just throw it into the wash with the rest of your clothes (firt make sure that the fabric you have chosen doesn't bleed and spoil the rest of the clothes). When it comes out, it will already have it's shabby chic look.
Iron it and wear.

Greek fashion designers on Etsy: chrystalshop

If you like to look for clothes on Etsy, like I do, you can't have missed Marika Poulopoulou's lovely designs! In line with the current trend for bold color, Chrystal is offering you bright, colorful clothes, at the same time ensuring girly designs with a touch of romance.

All chrystalshop clothes are produced with care and love by Marika Poulopoulou in her studio in Athens, Greece. With a background of studies in the UK and working experience as a fashion designer in a Greek company, she decided to create her own independent line of clothing, that consists of fun, playful, limited edition clothes, full of character.

If you live in Athens you can visit her in her corner of the Meet Market in which she takes part frequently.
A selection of her work is also showcased in Whitebox, a showroom located in the centre of Athens at 26 Praxitelous str, 5th floor.
